Floaters and Flashes
Floaters and flashes of light range from common to urgent. Learn which patterns need prompt attention.
Floaters and Flashes: the short answer
Occasional floaters are common, but a sudden increase in floaters, new flashes of light, or a curtain-like shadow in your vision may require immediate medical attention. Call the office promptly, and call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.
What patients notice
Specks, threads, or cobweb shapes that drift when the eye moves, and brief arcs or sparks of light, particularly in dim conditions.
Why timing matters
A change in the pattern matters more than the presence of floaters alone. If floaters increase suddenly, if flashes are new, or if part of your vision seems blocked, do not wait for a routine appointment slot.
